Monopoly gets a facelift...but at what cost?
Monopoly gets a facelift...but at what cost?

BLOG - 2/8 My jaw dropped when I saw on Yahoo.com that the ever-popular Monopoly is getting a makeover.

Growing up, my family spent many nights around the rectangular board arguing over who was going to be the thimble and who was going to be the boot. Who was stuck in jail, or who forgot to collect $200 when passing "Go" was the biggest of our worries. We also had that built-up excitement when the person closest to "Go" was on Broadway and had enough money to put a house on it. If you were the unlucky person to end on Broadway and have to pay $300 or so to your parents, your night may have just been ruined.

This new, circular board that I already despise, has a centerpiece that is used as the ATM and plays music. (Really?) There are debit cards (no paper money) and absolutely no way to teach children the value of a dollar. I know I learned how to count money through Monopoly. There already is a new version of Monopoly out in stores with credit cards and ATM's but does Hasbro have to annihilate all hope of a classic game going back to its roots?

Now, instead of collecting $200 when passing "Go" players collect 2 million. Is that even fathomable? Is that necessary? What I want to know is how the game will ever stop. I know the person with no money is supposed to end the game, but can that even happen when people are collecting 2 mil when trotting around the board one time?

The Yahoo article says how the tech-savvy youth is going to enjoy this updated version of my personal favorite classic game. What about these techy youths parents who want a rousing game of Monopoly, and end up with Rihanna singing out of the center console? Is that how they want to spend their Saturday night game night? How about some "Crazy In Love" to end your evening? I know my mother would have a conniption if she heard Beyonce booming from our Monopoly game.

Yes, it is a new era of many things, but why do these companies have to kill our classics with new renditions of games that were fine to begin with?

Yeah, I totally agree with you here. The game is a classic and this new version just seems to have ruined the Monopoly experience. But who knows, maybe the new generation of kids will really like it. (Continued…)
