BLOG 2/8 - As a final year student athlete at Mercy College, I couldn't be more elated to depart.
Not only have I gotten worse as a player but the volleyball program at Mercy continues to deteriorate on a yearly basis.
I came to Mercy College from Jamaica just over two years ago with the intention of studying and playing at a prestigious college in the United States. I had already represented my country both at the junior and senior national level participating in Caribbean Championships in Barbados and Martinique and World Championship Qualifiers in Jamaica and Dominican Republic.
I thought this was the step into the right path where I will add to my experiences by playing in the NCAA Division Two league. I did play against some talented teams and also with some talented players on Mercy's team, however, each year the skill level of Mercy's athletes began to decrease which in turn allowed me to start playing at their level.
I believe one reason for this decrease is the yearly changes of coaches not just for the volleyball team but for most of the sports that Mercy participates in. Last year alone, Mercy had a new coach for volleyball, basketball male and female teams, softball, just to name a few. Towards the end of the fall season, the volleyball had to play their last three games without a head coach.
In this dying athletic program, Mercy has now introduced the new sport - Lacrosse - both for males and females which I hope will help the program and not completely "blow out the flames."

Before coming to Mercy I was well-rounded player, playing against some of the best teams in the world such as Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, U. S. A. and Trinidad and Tobago.
After starting my career at Mercy, I have now lost my passion for the sports and my skill level is at the point of no return.
Studying in Jamaica and playing for my school there, I was mostly focused on my education and athletics. I thought that it would have been the same here, but when I got to New York everything came crashing down.
