Stella Liebeck, 79, suffered third degree burns on her groin and inner thighs while trying to add sugar to her coffee. According to CommonDreams.Org, Liebeck requested $20,000 compensation. McDonalds denied it.
The article states that the burger giant, made its coffee 30-50 degrees hotter than other restaurants, about 190 degrees. According the report, doctors informed that it takes 2-7 seconds to cause a third degree burn at 190 degrees. Eventually the woman won a little less than half a million; still more than she asked for.
I've seen other not so smart ideas that may actually work to sue a company, in movies. In particular the movie Rat Race comes to mind. In the movie two brothers plot a scheme in which one of them "trips" over a bell and stumbles down the stairs of a mall, thus giving them the opportunity to sue the mall and get lots of money. The plan eventually backfires when their argument of who takes the fall leaves the bell on the floor unattended. Later in the same scene a woman trips over the bell and she falls down the stairs, and a lawyer approaches her offering her services.
While there are many ways to get free money, the most painful, and dare I say, ingenious was way is to hurt yourself inside a corporate giant.
As long as you don't mind suffering third degree burns, or losing a leg; if it helps, being drunk out of your mind seems to ease the pain a bit.
