Feb. 17 - Can you believe that there is a place where there is neither summer nor winter, neither autumn nor spring? But days that are filled with lovely sunshine and a little rain.
Yes, Jamaica.
Jamaica, Jamaica - oh how I miss you so much. I keep picturing the beautiful sunset meeting far away on the shimmering blue water. The cool breeze and the hot sun against my skin and the feeling of the warm sand beneath my feet. Not to mention feeling that refreshing water wetting my legs and been tickled as a school of tropical fish passes me by.
In Jamaica, there are so many trees in each yard. We have mango trees, banana trees, june plum tree, ackee tree (our national dish), breadfruit tree, apple tree (just to name a few_. Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be prepared on a daily basis without going to the supermarket.
Imagine walking up to a mango tree and picking a mango and biting in it. What a feeling one can experience, but that feeling can never be a reality here in New York.
What is this that I am in? 0 degree weather! Not in a lifetime would I have thought that this type of weather even existed. Being in New York has surely opened my eyes to the unbelievable. Snowing, hail, ice. I thought that was just done in movies. The lowest temperature I am used to in 20 years is 80 degree on a brisk Jamaica day.
Yes, it's the land of the free. The land of opportunity. But why do we have to suffer in this weather to enhance our education? In order to ensure a better future? I am going crazy dressing in scarves, which are only worn by women in Jamaica for special occasions. Then here comes the hats and cladding myself in layers on a daily basis, plus a coat or jacket to cover all that clothes up. No flip flops for seven months (November to June), no shorts, and no blouse without sleeves.
Oh Jamaica, the land of wood and water, surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. The Sea, better yet, the beaches that I could visit all year round. When will I ever get to visit the beaches here?
I hate this cold. I hate this weather. I want to go back to Jamaica to enjoy the beautiful weather.
But, duty calls. And as my grandmother always say "if yu want gud, yu nose haffi run."
Simply put, if I want to be successful, all things in life will not be easy. Sometimes I have to endure a lot of crying in order to obtain success.
Yes, Jamaica.
