Pat Kennedy has been named the new athletic director at Mercy College, announced on Aug. 12.
Kennedy, who succeeds Bill Sullivan as the athletic director, is thrilled to be part of Mercy's community and serve as the head of athletics.
"The education offered here at Mercy is wonderful,' she said. "There are 90 plus majors to choose from, it is affordable, and the location on the Hudson is key."
Before her arrival at Mercy, Kennedy served for 14 years at C.W. Post at Long Island University as the women's athletic director and women's basketball coach. "It was a small program that we helped to build not only on campus, but in the entire area," she said.
For her outstanding efforts as the athletic director, Kennedy was elected into the athletic hall of fame at C.W. Post in 2005.
Along with her role as the head basketball coach, Kennedy was also at the forefront of the field hockey team at Post, and sees the sport emerging at Mercy.
"I definitely see field hockey for Mercy in the future," she stated. "It's another up-and-coming sport, and I'd love to get it going, but it just depends on how far the program wants to go with it."
As the coach of the ladies' basketball squad, Kennedy led her team across the Atlantic to Europe for two tours of duty. "We could only go once every four years, but it was a great recruiting strategy," she commented. "I feel it is important to give student athletes new and exciting opportunities."
So far under Kennedy, facility improvements have been made, and more are soon to come. "The gym has been re-done, it's getting new bleachers, and we are close to making changes to the softball field."
Along with facility improvements, fundraising efforts are in motion. "Right now were are busy planning our Hall of Fame dinner, which will be held at the Crown Plaza in White Plains on Nov. 7," Kennedy said. "We also have a golf outing during the summer where we get the alumni to come back."
Kennedy is expecting the athletic program to move upward and credits Mercy's administrative changes for the positive athletic alterations. "The new president is very creative as far as working with the athletic infrastructure," Kennedy stated. "I give President Cline a lot of credit for appointing a full time recruiter to assist a part-time coaching model on the Division II level."
Kennedy is ready for a good athletic run at Mercy and is prepared for a positive experience as the athletic director.
Her motto: "The Mercy College Mavericks are on the move!"
