If you can recognize this acronym, then chances are you are one of the few who attended the Club Membership Drive at the Dobbs Ferry campus on Nov 22.
The Lions Club's used the acronym "YCJCYOD" to entice students to donate money to the victims of Hurricane Katrina only to find, to their surprise that "YCJCYOD" stood for "Your Curiosity Just Cost You One Dollar."
Cinthya Pages, 24, a senior and member of three of the five clubs in attendance, was disappointed with the outcome. "Quite frankly, I was very disappointed with the Club Membership Drive. After months of hearing the student bodies' complaints about poor student life on campus, it was disappointing to see that students did not make the effort to even approach the table and ask what we were doing."
Pages also stated that some students are more concerned about having parties than they are with becoming a part of an organization or an event that could benefit them in their future endeavors.
Stacey Johnson, the Associate Campus Manager, confirmed that this was the first membership drive but that there have been Club Fairs in the past. She commented that the purpose for the event was to give existing clubs a chance to recruit members before the Club Fair, which will be held the first week in February.
A "how-to" was also available for students interested in creating or reinstating an existing club. Mercy College presently has 16 existing clubs, but the Lions Club, Creative Minds, X-treme Fire Ministries, Student Council, and the Impact were the only clubs who participated in the membership drive.
"I think the event was a success overall. The clubs' presentations were inviting, but I have noticed a lack of school spirit," said Johnson.
Johnson said she didn't know why there was a lack of participation, but that Mercy wants to change that. "This was only a test run, but the real test will be in February at the Club Fair where all the clubs will be represented."
According to Johnson, there were only five clubs present because of schedule conflicts and the last minute factor of the event.
Maureen DiNoia, 19, a freshman-nursing student, did not even know that a Club Membership Drive was happening in the school cafeteria. "If I had seen advertisements around, I probably would have attended," said DiNoia.

I know Dobbs Ferry is the "main campus", but why wasn't there something similar at the other campuses? It's difficult to have "school spirit" when not much happens at your location. (Continued…)
