Once upon a time a boy would ask a girl out, pay for dinner, maybe a movie, and then if he was lucky he'd get a goodnight kiss after he walked her to the doorstep. Flash-forward to the new millennium, where dating can be referred to as a waste of time and "hooking up" is what it's all about.
"I don't remember how many guys I've hooked up with!" states Julia Zvyagina, a student at Manhattanville College, who believes that making out is the definition of "hooking up."
The art of "hooking up" varies from person to person. According to the 1997 article College Dating from the Journal-Sentinel, the term can mean anything from kissing to casual sex.
Zvyagina isn't the only college student who feels that way. According to The Complete Idiot's Guide to Dating by Judy Kiriansky, American college students generally entertain liberal attitudes towards dating, tend to date young, date more frequently and are more likely to develop sexual partners.
"Dating in college is easier than in high school because parents aren't there and you can drink alcohol," said Sara Lar, 23, a student at Mercy.
"Traditional dating has lost its place in college. Unfortunately, in my experience, guys and girls, for that matter, are just out to get laid," said Daniel Racioppo, 20, a sophomore at Mercy.
"It all depends on the girl. Some girls you got to go out with first to get to that point, others you can just hook up with," explained Stuart Worthy, 19, a Mercy student.
"It all depends on what you want. If you want to date, then date. I am not for dating. There are just too many opportunities to meet other people," said Jafye Smith, a freshman at Mercy.
According to the Journal-Sentinel article, individual dates are a thing of the past. Girls go out in their groups, guys go out in theirs and when they meet up they usually pair off in the dark.
"I've hooked up at clubs like Avalon and Webster Hall. The guy has to be good looking too. If you're at the club dancing with a guy, then it just happens," Zvyagina.
