The women's basketball team has not seen much team success come their way this season. They have posted an overall record of 0-17 and 0-12 in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC). Coach Joe Keelin said that coming into this year, "I expected to be in the middle of the pack."
Unfortunately things have not panned out for Keelin. Two things that Keelin mentioned that hurt them are first of all, an ACL injury that senior Elissa Krossber suffered, sidelining her and also the fact that they do not play on campus. However he stressed that they are just turning the ball over too much. Keelin said the turnovers are "killing us."
However, while unlikely, it is not impossible for them to make the playoffs. They would have to win their remaining seven games and Concordia, NYIT or Queens College would not be able to win more than one more game this season, as they are all tied for the 6-8 spots and only the top eight teams make the playoffs.
If by some chance Concordia, NYIT or Queens College go on a bad streak and do actually only win one more game and Mercy wins their remaining seven, they will be tied for the final spot. If Concordia, NYIT or Queens College loses their remaining games and Mercy wins all their remaining games, Mercy makes the playoffs.
Do things look good for Mercy as far as a playoff berth goes? Probably not, but one never knows.
If nothing else, Mercy's own Markeisha Wigent has put on quite an impressive performance in her senior year and may be seeing the emergence of a freshman in Christina Baxter.
"Wigent will be tough to replace," Keelin said in regards to next season.
Wigent, the six foot center is averaging 11.4 points per game which is third on the team behind Baxter, who is the team leader, averaging 11.9 points per game and fellow senior, Nicole Steinburg, who is averaging 11.7 points per game.
"Steinburg is an outside shooter who needs to be replaced (for next season)," said Keelin.
In regards to the star rookie, "Baxter is a traditional point guard," Keelin said. He added, "She breaks down the defense." Keelin referred to Baxter as "the best point guard in the league."
Wigent is also the leading rebounder, not only as the overall leader, but while playing offense and on the other side of the ball, playing defense as well.
Baxter is 4th on the team in rebounds pulling down 74 total boards and averaging 3.9 per game.
Perhaps, if the veteran Wigent and rookie Baxter along with a few of the other seniors could put the team on their backs, they can help Mercy put together a respectable season.
As far as future plans go, he said that they will have a lot of recruiting to do, as they are losing many seniors. He said he already has a list of 17 to 20 girls for possible recruiting.
As far as next season goes, Keelin said, "We should be in pretty good shape." He also said, "We'll turn it around."
