Baseball: Last season, The Mercy Flyers won seven games and lost 29. They started the 2004 season by losing eight games in a row, only to win one game before another losing streak began (six games). It was a rough season last year, as the team suffered from multiple injuries the team didn't play consistent fundamental baseball.
This spring, the Mercy baseball team has gone through some changes. With only seven players returning from last season, many of their starting pitchers are no longer with the team. Tony Barcelo and Steve Parisi remain as the only two pitchers returning to the teams' rotation. Each had an ERA of over 9.00 last season, along with Glenn Snetzko, who is now a pitcher and part-time outfielder. Most of the team's offensive weapons are gone as well. Yet second baseman Robert DiToma returns this season after having 58 hits last season, which led the team. Adam Massi returns as well who had a slugging percentage of .317 and an on-base percentage of .415. The team is now in Florida and had lost its first three games of the season as of February 23rd.
Men's Tennis: In the 2004 season, the men's tennis team started off on a tear, winning five matches in a row. The team has been one of the most successful sports programs as the team once accomplished the school's only undefeated season. The team concluded last season with a stellar performance as it won the regular season championship in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC). The Men's Tennis team finished the season with a NYCAC record of 6 - 1 and with a 10 - 3 record overall.
This spring season, the entire team remains intact as Mabo Banno, Dennis James, Jonas Kazemekaitis, and Pavol Vasko rejoin the team to see if it can repeat as regular season champions or possibly more. "The Mercy men's tennis team is ready for the 2005 NYCAC challenge," said coach Barbaros Ozdogan.
The team is looking to recruit prospective players for the 2004- 2005 season. Scholarship opportunities are available, contact Ozdogan for more information.
